T O P I C R E V I E WD for DefiantI am uninformed. Please educate me, folks. Why can certain individuals get away with building their websites that promote hate crime, severely misleading statements, porn, child porn, cult worship, group suicide, anorexia...WHY?Does this have to do with something in the US Constitutional Law or Federal Law about "Freedom of speech"?!"Freedom of speech" as in "bullying is great" and "obesity is beauty, there's nothing wrong with it..."?!?!?!Does it all boil down to "Freedom of speech" or something else? Please get me better-informed. I would greatly appreciate it. D ------------------Love is life force, hate is death force.GypseeWindI honestly don't know D.Maybe they open up under a guise and then morph into what the sites message really is.There have been sites for anorexic girls to go to show pics and give support to one another on how to be even thinner! Usually those sites are shut down. But then another opens up, under another name.I guess it is just very difficult to keep track of the astronomical amount of sites that open, I mean whose job would that be? How many would we need to hire? How would we pay them?I would say that the "cult" sites can get away with it under freedom of religion in our constitution. As far as porn, that will never be controlled, there are just too many people that are interested in it.DervishThe USA has Freedom of Speech, and the ACLU is generally inclined to fight for it (among others, such as Feminists Against Censorship, believing that censorship eventually silences women, such as when some feminists joined with the Christian Right in Canada to ban porn and then the books talking about rape and the like by the same feminists that helped to pass the law saw their own books banned under the obscenity laws). Of course, TPTB almost always find an exception when it comes to sites that promote, or even suggest (sometimes humorously) violence against politicians and the like. But hypocrisy is nothing new.A problem I'd have with going after these sites is that it's NEVER done with any sense. For example, filters that block porn also block sites about breast & prostate cancer. What people will consider obscene or threatening will vary widely, and some wouldn't rest until say Spongebob was blocked (and they might actually do it). I am utterly amazed and a little frightened by how many mainstream politicians were behind the PMRC that once policed music, especially given the untrue & misleading things they often said. Same for cults...what are cults anyway? Some will have a very tight definition (so that you need a single person that controls everything--and I've seen some kids sing praises to Obama that sounded cultish, thanking him for everything good they had and would have), while others essentially consider it any religion that doesn't have enough members (I think in Russia, all--or nearly all at least--religions besides the Russian Orthodox are considered cults). Btw, misleading statements are pretty much a daily dose within any major news outlet (FOX, CNN, MSNBC, etc), as well as about anything a politician says. One thing I'd like to see banned are intentionally upsetting movie posters put up on billboards...I'm thinking specifically of the one for Captivity: http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/captivitybillboardbig.jpg I got physically ill seeing that, and enough have PTSD who would be agitated by it. Even people without it said they found driving by it disturbing. But of course it was DESIGNED to be controversial, because controversy sells tickets, so by willfully upsetting people, they were increasing their profits. I'm not violent, but if I ever meet the person that came up with that marketing idea, I just might get violent. That said, I'd just do away with the movie ratings system, at R/17 and under at least (especially as it seems to do very little to nothing to keep kids out anyway), and replace it with symbols that show what's in it (so you know if it has graphic violence, rape, drug use, promiscuity, etc) and let viewers decide based on that. Geocosmic* ValentinePeople can put up child pornography sites at their own risk but they will be dismantled as soon as they are discovered and if the website owner is found, they do get into trouble with the law, so those sites aren't really allowed.ValusDervish, ValusEmbrace the chaos!Every man for himself...Everyone's values conflicting...No way to prove the truth...Everyone wrong, everyone right...But fight, dammit, fight...Strive in strife...Take a side...Take a life...This is the wayit has always been. This is the life.~ ErisD for DefiantIf you asked me, I'd define "cults" as either those that are not recognized by, say, the US Constitutional Law, or, in simple terms- any individual or group that worships the dark forces, and encourages their followers to harm instead of to heal. Every man for himself...
Everyone's values conflicting...
No way to prove the truth...
Everyone wrong, everyone right...
But fight, dammit, fight...
Strive in strife...
Take a side...
Take a life...
This is the wayit has always been.
This is the life.
